Clare Keating

Clare the winner. Clare the athlete. Clare the competitor. That is how former Senior Aircraftsman Clare, 38, from Middlesborough, wants to be perceived. Not just as a wife, mother, cook or cleaner, or as someone who in 5 – 10 years’ time will be completely blind. She said: “I have a purpose and a goal that I’m trying to achieve.

I realised at the UK trials that my disability does not define me. It is just a small part of who I am. My prognosis isn’t good, but this has taught me that life goes on.” Committed to her training, Clare has joined a running club and recently ran her first 5km, saying she felt “10ft taller” for having done so. She also sings with the Help for Heroes choir which gives her release.

She added: “I have a fire in my belly and I will only get better. I am fitter, stronger and more confident than I have been for a long time and I want to continue to see where this takes me.”
