Why remembrance is important to me – Help for Heroes Volunteer Marilyn Barnett

Posted by Help For Heroes

I first became involved with the Charity through a friend who’s an RAF Veteran. I desperately needed help with my garden and he kindly helped.

Once we’d tackled that challenge together, he was keen to fill his time with another activity… so he took on the Big Battlefield Bike Ride. After all his hard work I wanted to support him, so I helped him raise money for the Charity.

The more I fundraised for Help for Heroes, the more interested I became, so I decided to Volunteer in 2010. Today I’m a County Co-ordinator, it’s a great way to do some good whilst having fun.

If you’d like to Volunteer for charity, I’d highly recommend Help for Heroes. There are so many ways to help that fit in with your time – just get involved!

Why my Tommy is important to me

As we approach the centenary of World War One I’ve been thinking how unimaginable, horrendous and futile it was. It was meant to be the war to end all wars, yet we still have conflict today.

The There But Not There campaign helps us remember the sacrifices our Armed Forces have made and continue to make. Buying a Tommy is such a simple way to do this, the figures are a powerful image and so poignant.

Somebody bought my Tommy for me. This touching gesture inspired me to give a couple to friends. I also bought the pin badge and car stickers – it’s my chance to show respect and thanks for the huge sacrifices innocent people have made to keep us all safe.

Why you should buy a Tommy

Help for Heroes are one of six charities There But Not There are supporting through funds raised by Tommy sales. Your purchase will help the Charity continue to make a big difference to wounded, injured and sick Service Personnel, Veterans and their families.

Seven people leave the Armed Forces with life changing injuries and illnesses, every day. It’s our duty to support those who served to keep us safe, buying a Tommy will help achieve this.
