Team Plymouth have been crowned champions of the 2018 Help for Heroes Phoenix Winter Games in a nail-biting finale.
With only 1 point in it, Plymouth secured victory over Team Tidworth A and Team Colchester who came joint 2nd place – just missing out on the Winter Cup and bragging rights.
“The games have made me feel great again, I’ve met new friends and its given me something inside that makes me feel worthy. It’s great to get out, meet people and have a laugh. It makes you feel normal again.”
The week consisted of Hungry Polar Bears (think Hungry Hippos but with people), Sledge Hockey, Curling, Skiing and Clay Pigeon Shooting and the coveted Sled Dog Racing.
A fantastic week of activity was rounded off with a Gala-style awards dinner to congratulate the efforts of all those that took part.
The competitors turned up not knowing what to expect - many had never tried any of these sports before. After a week of friendly competition, long-lasting memories and friendships were made.
“it’s been good it’s given me a chance to get in touch with people I’ve not seen in years but we’ve been able to speak about our problems. I’ve never done this before it’s been a massive experience. I was nervous at the beginning, getting to know the team but once you get into the team spirit it gets lifted and it feels like you’ve known each other for years”
