Longstanding supporter, David Howes, is no stranger to public collections. Over the years he’s fundraised for numerous Big Battlefield Bike Rides, so is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to bright ideas to drum up support.
Here are his top three tips for fabulous fundraising…
- First impressions count so ensure your fundraising base is organised and looks professional. David stresses that potential supporters are more likely to approach if your table is beautifully decorated and that any merchandise is clearly labelled:
“I have found that two pull-up banners – one either side of the table – draws the eye, and lets people know instantly who you are and what you are fundraising for. Having a few pictures of you in action to decorate the table is also a great conversation starter if you have them.”
- A smile goes a long way. Despite having fun most of the time, David is all too aware that fundraising can also be a challenge. Whether you’re collecting in the middle of a rainy, windswept field, or fundraising at an event which resembles the Mary Celeste, it’s important not to let anything dampen your spirits:
“Stay cheerful and good humoured even if you're having a quiet day – passers–by do notice that kind of thing. Listen to the stories people tell you, you'll be surprised just how open they can be; it’s all part of the experience. Don’t forget to say, ‘thank you’ when someone makes a donation – it goes a long way!”
- Connections count remaining on the subject of being friendly, David also knows just how important it is to get along with your venue owners:
“Always build a good working relationship with the venue owners – it helps tremendously with repeat events. Let them know when you will arrive and when you are packing up. Give them your thanks and tell them how much you raised that day. Make sure you clear up the venue once you’ve finished so that it looks like you were never there. This all helps to build the relationship, particularly at popular locations in high demand.”

Get permission Contact the owners of the land or venue where you want to hold your collection. For public spaces (parks, high streets, etc.) you will need the permission of the local council. For all other venues, you will need the permission of the necessary site or store manager. Register Once you have permission, contact our friendly Supporter Care Team on 0300 303 9888 to register your fundraising event. What we need to know Tell us the site address, which challenge or event you are fundraising for, the date(s) of your collection, and the names of everyone who is planning to help you on the day.
InsuranceCheck you are covered under the venue's own Insurance, unfortunately we cannot provide this or accept responsibility or liability. You may need to consider the following options:
- Public liability insurance
- Event cancellation insurance
- Travel or health insurance
- Insurance against damage to property owned, hired, or borrowed
