Today Flying for Heroes, a team of 8 wounded heroes, in association with Help for Heroes, have announced their plans to take on the Great Rift Valley. The incredible challenge, which will take place in September 2014, will see these newly qualified pilots attempt to fly Para-trikes across the Great Rift Valley Kenya in Africa over a three week period, whilst raising money for Help for Heroes.
After a rigorous traingin and education programme, The eight trainee student pilots will attempt the 1000km journey from Mt Kilimanjaro to Mt Kenya in the north. Not only will the Flying for Heroes team traverse the Rift Valley but other impressive and challenging landscapes including deserts, lakes, savannah, jungle, rivers and mountains.
Rory Mackenzie, Team Leader of the eight attempting this impressive expedition, said: "I'm so lucky to be taking part in such a unique adventure, I have only recently taken to the skies having learnt how to pilot a glider and its very true what they say, once you experience the feeling of flight you are hooked. It’s wonderful that we have been able to include other veterans with an array of injuries and illnesses. I know first-hand how effective and life reaffirming these sorts of adventures can be and I'm sure every one of the guys will have learnt a little more about themselves after we touch down at the end of the epic journey."
Founded by adventurer, pilot and entrepreneur Neil Laughton and SkySchool Managing Director and flying instructor Alex Ledger, the enterprise aims to create a legacy that inspires individuals and supports Help for Heroes, helping to create pathways for members of the team and other wounded personnel to gain employment in the aviation industry.
