“I wanted to give back to the Charity that has enabled me to live!”

Nick Steele was a Broadcaster with the British Forces Broadcasting Service, and toured alongside the British Army in Kosovo, Bosnia, Northern Ireland, the Falklands and Iraq.

Because Help for Heroes supports civilians who support the military on deployment, we’ve been able to help Nick learn a range of ways to manage his diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

We’ve also been able to help him write a Will and provide for his family and other Veterans, as he explains here.

Nick Steele and Family

"To me, writing a Will was a daunting task that I thought would be over complicated and only for people who really had everything in order. But it was also something I’ve wanted to do since my daughter was born.

"When I heard Help for Heroes were part of the National Free Wills Network I thought this was my opportunity.

"I emailed the address on the advert, heard back almost instantly and was sent a will writing pack and the details of the nearest Solicitors in the scheme. I called one of the contacts on the list and explained that my wife and I wanted to book an appointment under the National Free Wills Network.

"The date came...I was full of panic but there was no need to be worried. The whole process was over within half an hour.

"I was asked about who I wanted to leave my estate to and if I wished to leave a gift to charity. As Help for Heroes are the only charity who offered to support me, I decided to repay their kindness with a gift in my Will.

"I wanted to give back to the charity that has enabled me to live! I want to help them continue supporting others as they have supported me.
Without Help for Heroes, I wouldn't be here. Now I want others to receive the care and hope I benefited from when I felt I had nothing else to give."

By using our free Will-writing service, Nick has been able to provide for his family and the charities close to his heart.
