In 2013 HRH Prince Harry visited the Warrior Games in Colorado, wishing the Help for Heroes funded British Armed Forces team the best of luck in the games. His visit inspired him to announce his vision to bring the games to Britain. Bryn Parry, Co-founder of Help for Heroes, said that with Prince Harry's help an international competition for wounded servicemen could take place in London next year. He said: 'If Harry can set up the vision, we can make it happen.'
Here we are today, working alongside Invictus Games and the MOD turning that dream into a reality.
Last month wounded, injured and sick serving personnel and veterans hoping to compete in the Invictus Games welcomed a special visit from Prince Harry at our Recovery Centre, Tedworth House.
The Invictus Games, the single biggest international sporting event for our wounded, injured and sick, will involve 400 participants from 13 nations and will be held at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from 10-14 September.
Last month Prince Harry was on hand to wish the guys and girls good luck on their journey to the Games, presented by Jaguar Land Rover.
During his visit, Prince Harry met with over 25 potential competitors who are hoping to take part in the wheelchair rugby, cycling and indoor rowing events and make up part of the 100 strong British Armed Forces Team.
Help for Heroes are responsible for recruiting/training and selecting the team and we have already received around 200 applications from men and women who would like to take part in the Games. With a 240% increase in individuals doing a sports recovery activity since London 2012 Paralympics, we are proud to be involved in such an event.
Martin Colclough, Help for Heroes, British Armed Forces Team Manager said: “Help for Heroes have been supporting individuals in sport since 2008 and are delighted to be training and helping to select the British Armed Forces Team for the Invictus Games. We will be holding at least one training session a month across each of the nine sports throughout the UK. We hope by combining the expertise that exists within Help for Heroes and the National Governing Bodies, we will be able to create the strongest British Armed Forces team that will be a force to be reckoned with.”
The Invictus Games Organising Committee today also launched the competition schedule. There will be sessions for nine sports across four days for Athletics, Archery, Wheelchair Basketball, Road Cycling, Indoor Rowing, Wheelchair Rugby, Powerlifting, Swimming and Sitting Volleyball.
