Commemorating D-Day with Ambassador Cruise Line

To mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, both Ambassador Cruise Line ships - Ambience and Ambition – sailed in tandem to the Normandy coast as part of two special D-Day anniversary cruises.

Help for Heroes Ambassadors Jamie Hull and Nick Richardson were on board the ships, sharing their experiences and recovery journeys, bringing our partnership with Ambassador to life. It was a truly special and emotional event for everyone on board.

Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Royal Navy veteran Nick signed up for service in 1989 and served around the globe until his medical discharge in 2012. Nick shared his inspiring story with guests on board Ambition and had the opportunity to meet the captain on the Bridge.

Jamie spent time connecting with other veterans, sharing stories, and reliving memories with guests on board Ambience, while watching the Red Arrows and spectacular drone light show over Portsmouth.

The night sky came alive with an array of WWII icons and memorabilia, a fitting tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who took part in D-Day 80 years ago.

Reflections and Commemorations 

On 6 June services were held on the decks of both ships where Nick and Jamie gave readings. The services were followed by a themed celebratory lunch made with rationed items and ration books ready to be stamped!

Later in the day, Jamie gave an insightful talk, sharing his journey and the impactful work of Help for Heroes, leaving guests inspired and proud to support the cause.

A truly special moment took place when Ambience and Ambition crossed paths off the coast of Omaha Beach, one of the Normandy Beaches where troops landed 80 years ago. This ship meet-up, in such a historically significant location, was an unforgettable experience for all guests and crew.

The D-Day celebrations continued with a Great British Party – a truly joyous occasion for all board.

Nick and Jamie’s reflections of their time in service, and of their ongoing recovery journey, were invaluable and highlighted to all on board the importance of supporting our veterans.
