Blog post written by Anna Boggi, UK Team Manager
Maria-Theresa Miles and Spencer Bull were our rifle shooter finalists and the whole team were there to support them at the finals in the Lakeside Centre this morning.
Spencer was up first and Mike Ryan supported him all the way though his event. Maria-Theresa was up in the second round and shot very well.
Unfortunately, they didn’t get through to the medal match, but they both did incredibly well and you could see the huge achievements on both of their faces.
The team then went over to the United Centre, home of the Chicago Bulls. Here we watched the finals of the sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball competitions. The UK team didn’t make the finals but we cheered the teams on that did and it was great to watch and cheer on the new friends we had all made out here.
Laura Knowles, Jonny Holloway and Daniel Grobler were the three selected by Team Sports Manager Charlie Walker to play in the Celebrity Wheelchair Basketball Match. They were all so made up to have been selected and very excited to play. Alan White even got David Eigenberg, who is well known from Sex and the City and Chicago Fire to carry the now famous Teddy Bear on his lap during the game.
At the end of the match the ‘Heart of the Team’ Award was given out. This is given to a team member who has gone above and beyond what is expected of them as a team member, nominated by the staff on the trip.
Alan White was picked for this award and he was lost for words when I got the wonderful job of telling him the news. Myself, Alan and Group Captain Ruth paraded onto the pitch alongside the other service member winners and Alan was presented his award.
The Citation that went with his award read: ‘Alan has been a great team player throughout the Games. He is always supporting the team and is a great morale boost to everyone. Alan is a kind and caring man and it’s been a pleasure to have him and TEDDY BEAR on the team.’
The team all had such a great evening cheering on new friends and to have been in the Home of the Chicago Bulls was just fantastic.
