Help for Heroes (H4H) is all about getting the best for the men and women of our Armed Forces, and we are proud to work with other service charities to make sure this happens.
Fisher House
Help for Heroes are delighted to announce that £2m has been granted to support recovering personnel and their families at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). The grant will be used to fund the construction and help meet the running costs of a Forces and Families Centre on site at QEHB to be named 'Fisher House'.
The project is a partnership between Help for Heroes, the Fisher House Foundation and the QEBH Charity. The total cost of the project is anticipated to be £4.2m with estimated running costs of £200k per annum.
The purpose-built two-storey property will be a short walk from the hospital and has been designed by Birmingham-based Glenn Howells Architects to complement the surrounding buildings.
Catering for people of all abilities, the home will be a largely open plan property with wide connecting corridors and wheelchair accessible lifts. There will be 18 en-suite bedrooms for families of patients to stay in as well as communal living facilities including a family room and play area, lounge, kitchen, dining areas and laundry room. Outside will be a private garden with space for children to play in and guest parking.
Help for Heroes have provided a grant of £1.5m to support construction costs of the house, in addition to £500k for running costs, which equates to £50k a year for 10 years.
The Fisher House Foundation, which provides Family Centres and Comfort Homes at Military Medical Centres throughout the USA, have committed £1.3m to the project, with the remaining £1.4m to be funded by the QEHB Charity. SSAFA as a service delivery charity will provide day to day services.
Construction of the Fisher House is due to start in April, with completion anticipated in early 2013.
